MANCHESTER CITY COUNCIL OVER THE MOON AT CITY'S RESPONSE

PARADE PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY

Manchester City Council has been overwhelmed at the response from local community groups wanting to take part in the first-ever Manchester Day Parade.

Groups and individuals from all over the city submitted ideas and designs illustrating the fantastic talent and diversity of the city and the final selection is a true representation of what makes the city great.

Vicky Rosin, strategic director for neighbourhood services at Manchester City Council said "We've had such an incredible response to this brand new event that it's proved impossible to accommodate everyone this year although we've been delighted at the way so many groups and individuals have combined their ideas and expertise to work together and ensure maximum participation. The parade is set to become an annual event and we hope we can explore options for more people to become involved next year."

Taking place on 20 June 2010, the Manchester Day Parade, will create a carnival atmosphere throughout the city centre. This year's theme is OUT OF THIS WORLD, showcasing some of the things that make Manchester special for those who live and work here. Organisers are hoping that crowds will flock to the city centre on 20 June to support this great new midsummer event.

The parade will contain many surprising elements but parade producers, the internationally acclaimed Walk the Plank, can reveal that an extraordinary peacock, two unicorns and a giant robot will form part of the spectacle.

Alongside the floats, inflatables and bands, will be the successful groups and individuals who registered their interest to be part of the parade. Youth clubs, environmental groups, dancers, various local charities and other organisations will amount to hundreds of children and adults celebrating what they love about their city.
